Porcelain dental veneers or dental 'caps' are thin shells permanently placed on the front of your teeth to transform your smile. If you are unhappy with yours and find yourself avoiding smiling or shying away from social situations because you are embarrassed by the appearance of your teeth, then Porcelain veneers could be a solution.Request Appointment
Veneers have become a popular choice for Smile Makeovers because they can treat a variety of smile complaints, including:
They are hand-made which means we can significantly alter teeth by making them bigger, longer, wider, shorter, or whiter. We use our training in aesthetic dentistry to create a tooth form that will bring out the best for your face shape. Porcelain is the material of choice because different shades can be layered to recreate the translucency of teeth for the most natural results.
Veneers can be done as a standalone treatment, or in conjunction with other cosmetic dental treatments to achieve desired outcomes. For example, teeth straightening prior to veneer placement if you have very crooked teeth or cosmetic injectables may also be considered to correct a ‘gummy smile’.
It takes about 3 or 4 appointments over 3 to 4 weeks to complete treatment, here's what to expect at each stage:
Our first consultation is critical and has several objectives. Firstly, we get to know you, the goals you want to achieve from treatment and the aspects of your smile you wish to improve. Secondly, we check the health of your teeth and gums. Thirdly, we explain your treatment options so that you understand the pros and cons and can make an informed decision. Finally, we take a mould of your teeth and photographs of your smile from different angles. We use the photos and the mould to make a 'mock up' of your veneers, taking into consideration your face shape and our knowledge of ideal tooth form. We don't leave anything to chance and create a mock up that will be as close to the final result as possible.
During this visit, we prepare your teeth to accommodate your veneers. Then, we replicate our previously designed mock-up in a temporary material that you will use to 'test drive' your new smile. If any changes are needed, we can do these directly on temporary veneers to ensure your finals are perfect. Our veneers are lovingly hand crafted by a ceramist trained in the art of making teeth from porcelain. Each veneer is the result of many hours of delicate work.
At the final visit, we carefully remove your temporary veneers and place your custom-made porcelain ones. You'll also get clear instructions on how to care of your veneers to ensure a long-lasting result.
If your teeth and gums are healthy and you don't have any underlying bite issues then generally speaking you are a candidate for veneers. For most people, the decision to have veneers is a very personal one, and it depends on how important it is for them to change their smile.
When 'glued' to your teeth, veneers are incredibly durable with similar strength to teeth. However, like natural teeth, they are not indestructible and can chip or break, so care is needed. Another factor that might impact the longevity of veneers is night grinding. Often patients don't realise they grind their teeth at night, but when we do routine check-ups, we can often spot the warning signs of clenching and grinding. In this case, we ask patients to wear a night guard to prevent unnecessary stress on teeth and veneers. Keeping healthy teeth and gums is important, so excellent oral hygiene and regular professional cleans are required. On average, you can expect veneers to last ten to fifteen years; however, they could last even longer.
Cost can vary from case to case depending on the complexity and time required to achieve the ideal result. As a guide, you can expect to pay between $1000-1500 for a custom-made porcelain veneer. At your consultation, your dentist will be able to provide full costs along with your personalised treatment plan.
