The old saying - a stitch in time saves nine - couldn't apply more to our dental health. Many dental diseases are preventable with proper oral hygiene habits and routine dental visits. Even with regular brushing and flossing, dental plaque develops on our teeth. Plaque is a sticky film that develops as a result of naturally occurring bacteria in the mouth. This plaque causing bacteria loves to feed off sugar and simple carbohydrates and in doing so creates the acids that weaken tooth enamel and cause decay. Dental plaque build-up is completely normal in humans so don't panic, it just means we need to wage war on the bacteria through regular brushing consistently. Plaque is not visible to the naked eye, but eventually the plaque hardens and calcifies turning into tartar. Tartar is visible, and you will frequently see it first accumulate at the gum line and between teeth. It is this white, hard substance that the dentist will remove at professional cleanings to keep your gums and teeth healthy.Request Appointment
We recommend six monthly check-ups and clean to not only keep your teeth and gums feeling fresh but also identify any issues early. For example, gum problems and tooth decay. Gums will give us a warning sign when they are not happy by bleeding when we brush. By getting in early and removing the bacteria that is causing bleeding gums, there is an excellent chance that it won't progress to more severe gum disease. Similarly, decay can be fixed quickly and cost-effectively when spotted early. A small filling is a lot less work than a potentially significant one or a crown if the decay becomes large.
