FAQs

What is dental sedation?

It is a method of calming anxiety by sedation. At TL Dental we are able to offer dental intravenous sedation for complex procedures such as root canals, wisdom teeth removal, dental implants, and implant dentures. It is also commonly and colloquially referred to as ‘twilight sedation’, ‘anaesthesia twilight’, ‘twilight anaesthesia’ or ‘twilight anaesthetic’.

How does sedation work?

Our anaesthetist will administer the sedative via an intravenous needle prior to your procedure, and you’ll swiftly be put into a very calm state. They will then monitor your oxygen and heart rate throughout the procedure while our dentist performs your surgery. Some patients will feel so relaxed they might fall asleep, most will stay alert yet may have little recollection of the procedure when they come out of sedation, a few hours later.

Do you talk during sedation?

You might talk, but not much i.e. you’ll feel so relaxed you’ll have little awareness of the procedure, but will be alert ‘enough’ to respond to simple requests. Twilight sedation is quite different to general anaesthetic therefore any associated risks with general anaesthesia are also removed.

What’s the recovery like after dental sedation?

You’ll likely ‘wake’ one-to-two hours after your procedure; you’ll need an adult to drive you home, and you’ll also need to keep off heavy machinery for 24 hours. You might feel a little drowsy and sluggish afterwards, but no doubt relieved that your treatment is done and your dental health restored. These common recovery timeframes and experiences will vary from person to person however.

Is dental sedation safe?

Yes, however as per the case with any medical procedure, there is always some level of risk involved. Further, given this only twilight sedation the commonly known risks of a general anaesthetic aren’t applicable. Please be assured we only engage a highly experienced anaesthetist to mitigate risk, and any potential risks will be discussed in person with you at your initial appointment.

Is it easy to find sedation dentistry near me? Is it common?

We can’t speak for other dentists, however we’re proud to offer this service through our partnership with Pacific Anaesthesia North Coast, and our more anxious patients are certainly making use of this partnership, too.
