If a tooth of yours is looking a little worse for wear, whether it be through injury, decay or is even missing from a previous accident – you might have heard of dental crowns being a possible solution. In this article we cover dental crown cost, what it gets you, and how they (dental crowns and bridges) can have you looking and feeling like the king or queen that you absolutely are!

What are dental crowns?

Dental crowns (and bridges) are used to restore tooth functionality and appearance, when damage has occurred. They sit on top of the existing tooth and are affixed using dental cement. Once fitted they act and present just like natural teeth. A dental crown bridge may be used in place of a dental implant and sees two dental crowns placed on the teeth of either side of a missing tooth, with the bridge prosthetic tooth filling the middle space.

Cost for a dental crown

Most will consider the cost of dental crowns significant. In Australia prices vary per practice, but generally start from $1,500 per tooth up to $2,200. All of this is dependent on the location of the tooth, size of crown needed, preparatory work, crown material and sometimes the experience of the dentist. At TL Dental our dental crowns cost from $1,800 per tooth, and our payment plans can assist all eligible patients.

The different types of dental crowns

At TL Dental we use our CEREC (Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics) advanced technology to produce same-day ceramic dental crowns. These are best suited to the posterior (not visible) teeth, which include molars, given the material used. This is done via computer aided manufacturing – milling the dental crown at our clinic after taking impressions via camera. We use CEREC given its advanced technology, long-term outcomes and swift turn-around time.

Dr Teresa Li uses a CEREC machine to mill a dental crown for the patient, in-clinic, at TL Dental.

For visible front teeth, we use porcelain hand-crafted dental crowns, created in an Australian laboratory using high quality materials. These are colour matched to your surrounding teeth, shaped to fit your mouth and have the same translucency as your natural teeth.

Experience and costs matter

Dental crowns are typically recommended for patients whose natural tooth is at further risk of damage or decay, is broken, or cracking or has just undergone root canal treatment. All serious and potentially life-changing scenarios.

As mentioned, dental crowns cost upwards of $1,800 with us, and are priced per our significant experience and the high quality materials used.

Before committing to a dentist for dental crown treatment, it’s important to ask:

  • Do they have significant (i.e. years of) experience?
  • Who makes their crowns? Quality is incredibly important, because even the highest quality Australian-made dental crowns are at risk of chipping.
  • What happens if you’re one of the very few patients who have an allergic reaction – will they know how to treat this, or in the first instance, can they assess if you’re at risk?

Cost of crowns is definitely an important factor when deciding on your dentist, but be sure to equally assess and value their experience, and the dental crown materials, too.

The dental crown procedure

To ensure complete transparency our dentists will first provide you with a treatment plan, which will detail the treatment itself, and will answer common questions such as ‘how much will a dental crown cost?’ and ‘will it hurt?’

Dental crowns are used to restore tooth functionality and appearance, when damage has occurred. They sit on top of the existing tooth and are affixed using dental cement. Once fitted they act and present just like natural teeth.

Once you approve, at the treatment appointment we will then shape your tooth, to accommodate the crown (or ‘cap’, as it is referred to by some). A digital image of your tooth will then be taken using a high-speed camera (no need for physical moulds or impressions) and then a block of ceramic will be subsequently custom-milled into the shape of the crown, by our CEREC machine. Your dental crown will then be fitted the very same day (if convenient), removing the need for temporary crowns and weeks of waiting time for a permanent crown.

If however the tooth requiring the crown is visible or front-facing, your handcrafted porcelain crown will be custom-made offsite, and will be fitted at a second appointment. To do this, we will first shape the damaged tooth, take a digital impression of your tooth for measurements, and then send these to our offsite Australian-based laboratory ceramicists. We will then fit you with a temporary dental crown. Within two weeks we will see you back in our clinic to fit your custom-made tooth-matching porcelain dental crown.

Dental crown alternatives

Your dentist will advise the most suitable option to address your damaged or missing tooth. For decayed teeth – this might be an extraction, or a veneer, and for missing natural teeth, this might be a dental implant.

Dental treatment now, and a payment plan progressively

At TL Dental we understand that not everyone will have the immediate ability to fund the average cost of a dental crown – that’s why we have partnered with MediPay to provide flexible, manageable finance

To end, dental care in the form of dental crowns is essential for oral health – please don’t hesitate to book an appointment for fear of pricing – our payment plan can assist.
